[Release] MODEP 2018-09-11

Hi guys, here’s an updated MODEP build with fixes for the issues found and reported in recent release: [Beta] MODEP 2018-08-31, big thank you’s go to @Ghislain_Bourgeois, @jujudusud, and @jpcima.

Torrent: https://blokas.io/modep/image_2018-09-11-MODEP.zip.torrent

Usage notes:

  • User modep, pass blokaslabs (same pass for MODEP hotspot, on by default)
  • Hold The Button for 1-2 seconds to toggle Bluetooth discoverability for connecting with the Pisound App
  • Use 172.24.1.1 IP, port 12101 for TouchOSC clients and connect to MODEP WiFi hotspot

Changes:

  • Default dnsmasq service disabled, systemctl status now reports everything working OK.
  • Caps plugin suite built containing the fix by @jpcima (our Caps source fork)
  • Removed max 8 button clicks limit for switching pedalboards, as suggested by @MichaelRocketship

See [Beta] MODEP 2018-08-31 for more recent changes.

Hey folks!

Is it possible to install MODEP without having to use the image? I am running Volumio already and would like to add MODEP ontop. Thanks for all the work!

Best to just get another sd card and install the image its a lot more straightforward and optimised that way.

Yeah, I guess the dudes from volumio will tell me the same thing (already tried to install apps I need myself but failed) - but maybe it is easier the other way around with all the tweaks for audio already in place.

I’d agree with @Randomaztec - it is easier to just use a couple of SD cards for the different use cases.

On Linux, the audio software can easily conflict with each other, resulting in none of the use cases working. You would be able to run only one at a time and you’d have to know the procedure how to cleanly move from one setup to the other. This may be more difficult than simply switching the SD card on the hardware

Uh, hm… This is not really convenient - I am lazy and lose SD cards too easy.

I thought that‘s why there is pulseaudio for example to be able to have multiple sources (but yeah … I totally get that audio is easily being conflicted - I learned that myself when trying to avoid volumio and do it myself).

Yes, pulseaudio can mix audio sources, but for software like MODEP it’s best to be as close to the hardware as possible, to have the minimum possible latency.

There is an alternative - I heard it’s possible to set up multiple different OS images on a single SD card and select which one to load during boot. I haven’t tried this myself yet, but this is the tool: https://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot

Hmmm… the dualboot sounds like a solution - though it seems to be needing a keyboard + monitor which I don‘t have and to keep the pi headless.

Would still prefer another solution - and maybe realtime capabilities of jackd would also be an advantage for having a slightly better a/v sync when using the pi to stream audio from the AppleTV to the pi with airplay. But I suppose this is too advanced for me and switching SD card is the solution for me not understanding enough of linux audio.

Hi. Just to let you know. I came across a couple of effects that can’t be connected to.

When trying to plug in, they don’t show the white arrows, and when releasing the mouse button, the cable simply drops. Connecting from these effects seem to work, but I just tested a few.

I checked all the effects that came with the current release, to generate you a list of all the effects that don’t work. Hope that helps.

Hey, thank you for going through the plugins and testing them!

All of these plugins are accepting MIDI connections to receive note input rather than analog audio, unfortunately, the distinction is not clearly showed in the UI. You actually have to connect MIDI signals to those ports that don’t work. To get MIDI ports appear on the left side of the UI, connect a USB MIDI controller and enable it in the ‘MIDI Ports’ menu at the bottom of the UI, then you can use these plugins.

The AT1 x42 seems to be accepting both MIDI and analog signal.

Your welcome. Happy to help.

Well. That explains why they’re ‘not working’ Would it be a good idea to move these effects to the midi category then? Or is this category meant for something else?

Plugins in question are using MIDI data to generate Audio output, hence the Generator category is used.

Hi there,

Raspbian upgrades now to Buster version.
Is Modep going to upgrade too ?

I would be happy to help if my knowledge is sufficient !

Has soon as RPI-Distro/pi-gen is now on Buster the future new Beta version should be Modep-Buster too.

Hey! The image generator is here: https://github.com/BlokasLabs/modep

We plan to update this and Patchbox OS images to Buster, but it’s still not stable enough yet - we want to include the real time configuration kernel, but the latest version of 4.19.y-rt it does not boot with Raspberry Pi 3B+, but now at least it boots on Pi 2 and Pi 4…

Also, we’re considering consolidating MODEP into Patchbox OS, so MODEP could be installed and switched to and from using the patchbox -> module submenu, so you don’t have to keep multiple sd cards around.

That would be great!
